Character Descriptions
Taken from: https://melrosedrama.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/character-descriptions.pdf
The Ensembles This story cannot be told without strong ensembles! If cast in one of these ensembles, know that you are a vital piece of our storytelling and our success! The Storytellers: The Storytellers act both in and out of the story, as narrators and as players in the story itself (peasants, gossipers, general ensemble). This ensemble will feature solo opportunities as well as strong ensemble work. They are the backbone of this story and will be called to a majority of rehearsals Peasant Ensemble: Poor workers of the island. They pray to the gods for their very survival and are looked down upon by the Grand Hommes. Despite hardship, they are generally happy and family and love is at the center of all they do. The Grand Homme Ensemble : The wealthy people of the Island. They are descended from the French and consider themselves to be above the peasants and look down upon them with disdain. They surround themselves with material things and frivolous parties, lacking the community and heart of their peasant counterparts. The Humans Mama Euralie : Alto. Peasant farmer. Euralie harbors a strong belief in the gods, and believes that Ti Moune was spared by the gods for a reason. Her adoptive mother, She supports and loves Ti Moune, but she also wants Ti Moune to see things the way they are in the real world and stop living in a fantasy. Tonton Julian : Baritone. Peasant farmer. Sterner than Euralie, but has just as much affection for his adoptive daughter, Ti Moune. Like all the peasants, he believes in the gods, but he is more skeptical of their involvement than Euralie. He is proud of his simple life, and wants Ti Moune to keep her head out of the clouds and also be proud of her simple life. Little Ti Moune : A young version of Ti Moune, She is found in a tree and adopted by Mama and Tonton. She is stubborn, strong willed and sweet. As the show starts she is a girl who is scared by the storm and the reason they start to tell this story. Ti Moune : High belt. Peasant girl who keeps her head in the clouds. She loves Euralie and Julian but she does not want the life they have. She spends her days dreaming of a different, more glamorous life riding around in cars and not having to work hard and do chores. She believes very strongly that the gods saved her life when she was a small girl for a reason, and that they have grand plans for her. She falls blindly in love, and makes a promise to the gods to save the injured man, Daniel Beauxhomme, though she does not realize the true power of the gods. She truly believes that she and Daniel are meant to be together forever, and that he will ignore the fact that she is from a much lower social class than she is. She is naïve about the world, and stubbornly refuses to listen to wisdom of gods or her family. Daniel Beauxhomme : Tenor. Rich heir of a hotel chain. He is grateful to Ti Moune for saving his life, and loves her in his own way. He wants to keep her by his side, but he never plans to marry her, despite what she thinks. However, he does not consider any peasants to be in the same class as he is. He is not a cruel person, but he suffers from the self-absorbed privilege of the very wealthy, and does not see how his carelessness can hurt Ti Moune, who loves him so. He is engaged to Andrea. Armand : Baritone. Armand is the ambitious but careless Frenchman who first came to the island. He built a great fortune and had massive wealth. However, he treated the peasants as playthings. Eventually, one of the peasants bore him a son, who became the first Beauxhomme. Armand was driven out during the war. The Gatekeeper : He works at the Beauxhomme hotel, keeping the peasants out. He enjoys driving peasants away, and he distrusts Ti Moune immensely and would be only too glad to be able to throw her out of the hotel. Daniel’s Father : A stern and commanding presence who insists that Daniel marry Andrea and live up to the family name. He does not like the peasants. Andrea : Mezzo. The well-to-do fiancee of Daniel Beauxhomme. She hides her coldness and disdain for peasants behind niceties. She does not much care for Ti Moune, though she is willing to let her stay as a servant and a dancer because Daniel likes her. She considers all peasants to be far beneath her, as if they are not even from the same world. Madame Armand : A Feautured soloist in ‘The Sad Tale of the Beauxhomme’, Armand’s wife. Daniel’s Son : A young boy. The Gods The gods are forces of nature worshipped by the island’s peasants. They have taken a special interest in Ti Moune after hearing her prayers, and help her (or hinder her?) through the story, though their motivations are varied, and none of them are always kind. They often bicker with each other about how to accomplish something, as each of them have different methods for affecting the lives of the island inhabitants. These roles are NOT necessarily gender-specific, we will consider any actor of any gender for any of the gods. Gender pronouns used in the following descriptions are based on the original Broadway production. Papa Ge, God of Death : Tenor/baritenor. Papa Ge takes pleasure in death and suffering. He is a wily, cruel demon-god. He plans to take Daniel Beauxhomme’s life, but he is stopped for awhile by Ti Moune and her promise to the other gods. He watches the relationship between Ti Moune and Daniel like a greedy vulture, waiting for his chance to take Daniel’s life. He considers all lives to belong to him, as eventually rich and poor alike will have to die. He does have a soft side, though it is seldom seen. Many peasants are afraid of him. Asaka, Goddess of the Earth : Mezzo/soprano. Asaka provides the rich earth to grow crops and is considered a generous god by the peasants. She and Agwe do not get along very often, and they are at odds with each other much of the time. She does believe that people are much better off when they have sense and do not live in fantasy as Ti Moune does, but she finds Ti Moune and her love for Daniel “amusing.” Agwe, God of water : Bass/Baritone. Agwe is the unpredictable god of water, responsible for flooding the island and often destroying the crops that Asaka helped create. He takes pleasure in being cruel, but he also takes pleasure in being helpful, depending on his mood. He is as playful as he is malicious, creating the conditions that cause Daniel to crash his car. Agwe finds Ti Moune and her plight “interesting.” Erzulie, Goddess of Love : Soprano. The nicest of the gods by far. Erzulie takes a special shine to Ti Moune because of how in love she is. She is the one who gets the other gods to agree to answer Ti Moune’s prayer, wanting to show the girl (and the other gods) what true love can accomplish if it is, in fact, as true as it seems. |

Scenes and SettingsTaken From
https://www.mtishows.com/once-on-this-island From the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime), comes the Olivier Award-winning Once on This Island. This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel's heart, and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them. |

How will the directors cast the show?
There is equal opportunity for all students to audition from all grades. The directors will consider the student's potential to believably portray the part by his/her singing, characterization, acting, stage presence and movement. If solo singing is required, we will consider the student's musical capabilities: projection, staying on pitch and tone quality. Casting a show is a team effort and not just one director's decision. Therefore, casting is fair and not based on one director's opinion. Students are placed in roles in which the directors feel their talents will better the ENITRE CAST - NOT JUST THAT SPECIFIC STUDENT.
Will Everyone that auditions be in the show?
We hope to give as many students as possible the chance to perform, however, due to stage size, availability of costumes, student ability and overall effect of the production, we may not cast everyone who auditions in this production. There are many ways to be involved in a show other than being on stage. Learning to be a part of the team in a different way can really open your mind to new possibilities! Be open to trying something new!!
What if I want to work on the Show, but not be on stage?
There are many ways you can be a part of the team! Please come to auditions for just a moment and fill out the audition form. We will contact you shortly after auditions with more information!
How can I let the directors know I'm interested in certain roles?
You can indicate your preference on the audition form that you are interested in specific parts.
When are rehearsals?
Please refer to this AT-A-GLANCE calendar for an overview of the production schedule.
|
This is an outline of all rehearsals for the duration of the production. For a more detailed schedule, you will need to check the Rehearsal Calendar weekly during the production. You only need to attend rehearsals and stay when your part is involved. Please refer to the schedule and the MANDATORY REHEARSAL policy. As we get closer to the opening, some rehearsals will run late into the evening. _
What if I'm in a sport or work after school?
Unfortunately, your sport practice/competition or work schedule may conflict with the commitment required for this production to be successful. We need everyone there when we rehearse a scene, song or dance. When you are scheduled to rehearse, you are REQUIRED to be there. Depending on the conflicts, you may need to make a choice between the organizations.
What is the ATTENDANCE POLICY for rehearsals?
Attendance is important to the success of the show. Therefore, students must attend all rehearsals for their part. Students will be excused for SERIOUS illness (Doctor's excuse), death in the family, pre-arranged religious conflict, pre-arranged curricular conflict or pre-arranged extra-curricular conflict. If one of these situations arrises you must provide a written excuse, signed by your parent/guardian or doctor directly to Mr. Bernstein.
You are responsible for communicating your conflicts via the Conflict Calendar prior to auditions. All conflicts must be reported before auditions to be considered pre-arranged.
If conflicts arise that are NOT pre-arranged they will be UNEXCUSED. Any unexcused absence will result in a review of your participation by the directors. This review may result in removal from certain musical numbers in the show, or in serious situations, removal from the show. Please observe this policy. We cannot constantly re-teach choreography, music or staging.

What does "FULL company" mean?
Full Company is the entire cast! If a rehearsal is marked FULL COMPANY all students are required to attend. There are no excuses for not being there. We need everyone there to put all the pieces of this show together.
What if I can't attend all the performance dates?
Your presence is required at ALL PERFORMANCES. If you are unable to attend a performance, please do not audition. You cannot be a part of the cast if you are unavailable during the performance dates, but there are several other ways you can still be involved in the production!!
Does it cost anything for me to participate in the show?
Yes, it costs money to be involved in a production, but all students can be fundraise the money needed to be involved in this show!!
Please do not let money hold you back from auditioning. There are many resources available for Leyden students and families in need.
- Students are required to provide certain parts of their costumes, including all footwear. Pending your part, you may be required to wear character shoes, tap shoes, dance shoes, boots, etc. If you already own these items, there is no reason to purchase new ones, however, if you do not already own them, you will be required to purchase them. We may also ask you to bring in an item you most likely have at home like a white t-shirt or black dress pants, etc. Thrifting is always encouraged and a lot of fun when creating costumes for a show!!
- All students involved in the production will have the option to purchase a Show T-Shirt (approximately $10).
- All students involved in the production will also be required to pay a Meal Fee (approximately $35) to cover the cast meals.

Rehearsal Etiquette / Expecations
- Arrive early—at least 5 minutes early, or with enough time to put your stuff down, get your script/music etc, out, stretch for a dance rehearsal, etc. If you are going to be late, contact Mr. Bernstein as soon as you know. If you arrive late (it happens), avoid distracting the rehearsal; if you can, wait for an appropriate break in the action to slip in.
- Come prepared. This means:
- Practiced your music between rehearsals and come knowing your part.
- Practice your lines between rehearsals and come knowing your part.
- Before you head to rehearsal, double check that you have your music, script, and any necessary accessories (dance shoes, etc.).
- Bring a pencil. This one gets its own paragraph. Attending rehearsal without a pencil is like sitting through a university lecture without a taking notes. Even if you think you’ll be able to remember every direction given, every dynamic change, every cut, and every detail, really, you probably won’t. Keep a couple pencils in your binder so they’re always on hand.
- Don’t under- or over-mark the music.
- Be courteous to your peers and the OOTI Team.
- Don’t chat. If you need to communicate something, do so inconspicuously and quietly. Save personal conversations for break time.
- At the same time, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Approach your section leader during a break, or raise your hand with [appropriate] questions for any clarifications.
- Leave your arrogance at home. Members of a cast are all equal; everyone is contributing. Don’t gloat if you have a solo, and don’t bust out personal solos just to show off. Everyone will be more annoyed than impressed.
- Don’t miss rehearsal. It is a sign of disrespect to both the directing team and your cast members. Be careful not to double book yourself.
- Learn the art of the “hidden yawn.” Sometimes you just can’t avoid yawning, but you can hide it with a little creativity. Lean over to tie your shoe or pretend to scratch your nose to hide your gaping mouth. Don’t let the directing team catch you yawning.
- Treat your music and script with kindness. Try not to bend pages or tear them. Keep the this in a protective folder to keep it from getting crinkled in transit.
- Don’t wear perfume or cologne. You’d be surprised by how many people are allergic or irritated by it.
- TURN OFF YOUR PHONE. Phones will not be allowed during rehearsal hours. Make sure you communicate this to your family and friends. You will not have access to your phone during rehearsals and performances.
- Don’t eat during rehearsal. Make sure you pack snacks - and use break time to eat a snack. Bottles of water with lids are okay.
- Don’t question the directing team or treat them with disrespect. Trust in their artistic direction.
- Don’t complain about where you stand. Just because you are in the back doesn’t mean you’re not a valuable player; in fact, being in the group to begin with is a privilege in itself.
- Lastly, enjoy the process!
