How do I prepare?
CHECK YOUR CALENDAR. Take a look at the AT-A-GLANCE rehearsal schedule on the right and make sure that this is a commitment you can take on. PLEASE make sure you are available for all of the performances.

Singing Auditions: (to view music, click on button to the right) Pick one song to sing...but you may be asked to sing another! Familiarize yourself with all this music!! Memorize the audition songs - and think ahead to callbacks. MEMORIZE THIS MUSIC. We want to see you perform, not hold the paper and sing. Dance Auditions: All Students will learn a short dance combination with the choreographer and perform it for all the directors on stage in small groups. Come prepared to move. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. Jeans are not the best choice. You must wear a dance shoe or tennis shoe. NO FLIP FLOPS, SLIDES OR CLOGS. |

How do auditions work?
Please come to Wednesday's auditions if you can. If not, please come on Thursday.
Fill out the audition form honestly and print clearly.
Fill out the conflict calendar honestly and clearly. (NOTE: In order to do this, you must check your schedule before auditions begin and know any doctor appointments, family obligations, concert tickets, other Leyden commitments, etc. before you come to auditions.)
We will go over the audition songs together - only 1 or 2 times. It is essential that you prepare for these auditions.
We will then split you into a few groups. While some students are singing, all others will be dancing with the choreographer. After all students have sung, all students will perform the dance combination in groups on stage.
Pending time, we may ask some students to read from the script. To prepare for this, watch the movie and know the story. The lines from the script are very similar to the movie, and the overall story is basically the same.
NOTE: We expect to see your acting skills throughout your singing and dancing audition. We are looking for strong characterization throughout your entire audition. Show us confidence and emotion.

Please think about your digital citizenship. Do not tweet and post your emotional reaction to the cast list. Some people will be very excited. Some people will be very hurt. It takes a TEAM to make a great show - not 1 or 2 great people. EVERYONE has to be great in their part to make a GREAT show. Embrace the part you are cast in! We will all become close and create a great show with positive attitudes and open minds.

How will the directors cast the show?
There is equal opportunity for all students to audition from all grades. The directors will consider the student's potential to believably portray the part by his/her singing, characterization, acting, stage presence and movement. If solo singing is required, we will consider the student's musical capabilities: projection, staying on pitch and tone quality. Casting a show is a team effort and not just one director's decision. Therefore, casting is fair and not based on one director's opinion. Students are placed in roles in which the directors feel their talents will better the ENITRE CAST - NOT JUST THAT SPECIFIC STUDENT.
Will Everyone that auditions be in the show?
We hope to give as many students as possible the chance to perform, however, due to stage size, availability of costumes, student ability and overall effect of the production, we may not cast everyone who auditions in this production. There are many ways to be involved in a show other than being on stage. Learning to be a part of the team in a different way can really open your mind to new possibilities! Be open to trying something new!!
What if I want to work on the Show, but not be on stage?
There are many ways you can be a part of the team! Please come to auditions for just a moment and fill out the audition form. We will contact you shortly after auditions with more information!
How can I let the directors know I'm interested in certain roles?
You can indicate your preference on the audition form that you are interested in specific parts.
When are rehearsals?
Please refer to this AT-A-GLANCE calendar for an overview of the production schedule.
|
This is an outline of all rehearsals for the duration of the production. For a more detailed schedule, you will need to check the Rehearsal Calendar weekly during the production. You only need to attend rehearsals and stay when your part is involved. Please refer to the schedule and the MANDATORY REHEARSAL policy. As we get closer to the opening, some rehearsals will run late into the evening. _
What if I'm in a sport or work after school?
Unfortunately, your sport practice/competition or work schedule may conflict with the commitment required for this production to be successful. We need everyone there when we rehearse a scene, song or dance. When you are scheduled to rehearse, you are REQUIRED to be there. Depending on the conflicts, you may need to make a choice between the organizations.
What is the ATTENDANCE POLICY for rehearsals?
Attendance is important to the success of the show. Therefore, students must attend all rehearsals for their part. Students will be excused for SERIOUS illness (Doctor's excuse), death in the family, pre-arranged religious conflict, pre-arranged curricular conflict or pre-arranged extra-curricular conflict. If one of these situations arrises you must provide a written excuse, signed by your parent/guardian or doctor directly to Miss C.
You are responsible for communicating your conflicts via email to Miss C. All conflicts must be reported before auditions to be considered pre-arranged.
If conflicts arise that are NOT pre-arranged they will be UNEXCUSED. Any unexcused absence will result in a review of your participation by the directors. This review may result in removal from certain musical numbers in the show, or in serious situations, removal from the show. Please observe this policy. We cannot constantly re-teach choreography, music or staging.

What does "FULL company" mean?
Full Company is the entire cast! If a rehearsal is marked FULL COMPANY all students are required to attend. There are no excuses for not being there. We need everyone there to put all the pieces of this show together.
What if I can't attend all the performance dates?
Your presence is required at ALL PERFORMANCES. If you are unable to attend a performance, please do not audition. You cannot be a part of the cast if you are unavailable during the performance dates, but there are several other ways you can still be involved in the production!!
Does it cost anything for me to participate in the show?
Yes, it costs money to be involved in a production, but all students can be fundraise the money needed to be involved in this show!!
Please do not let money hold you back from auditioning. There are many resources available for Leyden students and families in need.
- Students are required to provide certain parts of their costumes, including all footwear. Pending your part, you may be required to wear character shoes, tap shoes, dance shoes, boots, etc. If you already own these items, there is no reason to purchase new ones, however, if you do not already own them, you will be required to purchase them. We may also ask you to bring in an item you most likely have at home like a white t-shirt or black dress pants, etc. Thrifting is always encouraged and a lot of fun when creating costumes for a show!!
- All students involved in the production will be required to purchase a Show T-Shirt (approximately $10).
- All students involved in the production will also be required to pay a Meal Fee (approximately $35) to cover the cast meals.

Rehearsal Etiquette / Expecations
- Arrive early—at least 5 minutes early, or with enough time to put your stuff down, get your script/music etc, out, stretch for a dance rehearsal, etc. If you are going to be late, contact Miss C as soon as you know. If you arrive late (it happens), avoid distracting the rehearsal; if you can, wait for an appropriate break in the action to slip in.
- Come prepared. This means:
- Practiced your music between rehearsals and come knowing your part.
- Practice your lines between rehearsals and come knowing your part.
- Before you head to rehearsal, double check that you have your music, script, and any necessary accessories (dance shoes, etc.).
- Bring a pencil. This one gets its own paragraph. Attending rehearsal without a pencil is like sitting through a university lecture without a taking notes. Even if you think you’ll be able to remember every direction given, every dynamic change, every cut, and every detail, really, you probably won’t. Keep a couple pencils in your binder so they’re always on hand.
- Don’t under- or over-mark the music.
- Be courteous to your peers and the BBB Team.
- Don’t chat. If you need to communicate something, do so inconspicuously and quietly. Save personal conversations for break time.
- At the same time, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Approach your section leader during a break, or raise your hand with [appropriate] questions for any clarifications.
- Leave your arrogance at home. Members of a cast are all equal; everyone is contributing. Don’t gloat if you have a solo, and don’t bust out personal solos just to show off. Everyone will be more annoyed than impressed.
- Don’t miss rehearsal. It is a sign of disrespect to both the directing team and your cast members. Be careful not to double book yourself.
- Learn the art of the “hidden yawn.” Sometimes you just can’t avoid yawning, but you can hide it with a little creativity. Lean over to tie your shoe or pretend to scratch your nose to hide your gaping mouth. Don’t let the directing team catch you yawning.
- Treat your music and script with kindness. Try not to bend pages or tear them. Keep the this in a protective folder to keep it from getting crinkled in transit.
- Don’t wear perfume or cologne. You’d be surprised by how many people are allergic or irritated by it.
- TURN OFF YOUR PHONE. Phones will not be allowed during rehearsal hours. Make sure you communicate this to your family and friends. You will not have access to your phone during rehearsals and performances.
- Don’t eat during rehearsal. Make sure you pack snacks - and use break time to eat a snack. Bottles of water with lids are okay.
- Don’t question the directing team or treat them with disrespect. Trust in their artistic direction.
- Don’t complain about where you stand. Just because you are in the back doesn’t mean you’re not a valuable player; in fact, being in the group to begin with is a privilege in itself.
- Lastly, enjoy the process!
